Walter Holland was born on 30th August 1872. He has 2 entries for Dudley Grammar School along with his older brother Herbert, both on 27th April 1881 when their parent was given as Reverend Stewart Holland, home address: St James’ Vicarage, Dudley. Walter left the school at midsummer 1890, a year after his brother Herbert.
Walter Holland enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 1st May 1915 at Hamilton, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England on 30th August 1872, his next of kin as his brother Hubert Conway Holland, The Vicarage, Sutton St Edmund, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and his occupation as a farmer. He had served 19 years with the 77th Wentworth Regiment and 1 year with a South African Regiment. Walter was 5 feet 7½ inches tall with a fair complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He sailed from Canada bound for England on 19th June 1915 where he remained until he proceeded overseas to France on 2nd February 1916. Walter was killed in action on 4th May 1917.
